Comprehensive Composting Efforts
Hutchinson operates one of the most successful residential composting programs in the state. In 2015 alone, the city diverted 3,800 tons of waste from landfills, with 1,830 tons coming from the source-separated program. This initiative not only reduces landfill usage but also produces valuable compost for community use. The city’s composting facility, Creekside Soils, has been instrumental in these efforts, processing food and yard waste collected from residents.
Urban Forestry and Tree City USA
For over 40 years, Hutchinson has been recognized as a Tree City USA, highlighting its commitment to maintaining a robust urban forest. The city’s Forestry Division manages over 13,000 public trees, providing maintenance, planting, and educational outreach. Stormwater Management
To address environmental concerns related to stormwater runoff, Hutchinson participates in the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) program.
