GreenStep Cities Program
In April 2015, Hutchinson joined the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program, a voluntary initiative that assists cities in achieving sustainability and quality-of-life goals. By June 2016, Hutchinson had advanced to a Step 4 City, reflecting significant progress in areas such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, and urban forestry.
Renewable Energy Initiatives
The Hutchinson Utilities Commission offers the Bright Energy Choices program, allowing residents and businesses to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). This program enables participants to offset their electricity consumption with renewable sources like wind and solar, promoting the development of clean energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Urban Forestry Efforts
Our community takes pride in its urban forest, comprising over 13,000 public trees. Hutchinson has been recognized as a Tree City USA for over 40 years, underscoring our commitment to maintaining and expanding our urban canopy. The Forestry Division actively engages in planting, pruning, and educational outreach to ensure the health and growth of our urban forest.
Composting and Waste Management
Hutchinson operates a comprehensive composting program through Creekside Soils, processing food and yard waste collected from residents. This initiative diverts significant amounts of waste from landfills, producing high-quality compost for community use and reducing our environmental footprint.
